The Lemonade Cleanse Diet is a detox diet that was created in 1941 by a naturopathic doctor by the name of Stanley Burroughs who originally called it The Master Cleanse. The purpose of the diet was to rid the body of toxins and allow it to heal from disease. Most people who went on the diet found out they lost quite a bit of weight very quickly so the Lemonade Diet has come to be used for quick weight loss.
It is important to know that while some of the weight lost is fat, some of it is water, which means some of the weight will be easily gained back once the diet is over. Like most detox diets, the Lemonade Cleanse Diet is very strict and may be difficult to adhere to.
The only thing that is to be consumed while on the diet is the lemonade mixture and a laxative tea. The lemonade is made with pure water, grade B maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. Here is the original recipe devised by Burroughs.
8 ounces room temperature water
2 tablespoons fresh lemon or lime juice (equal to one-half lemon)
2 tablespoons genuine grade B maple syrup
1/10 teaspoon red pepper (cayenne pepper)
Combine ingredients, shake, and drink. Consume six to twelve glasses each day.
Burroughs claimed that the combination of lemon juice and maple syrup is enough to provide all the essential minerals and vitamins that are needed and he advised to take no solid food while on the diet. He also recommended the use of a gentle herbal laxative tea to be taken daily to help remove toxins and waste from the intestinal tract.
It is important to be careful of what you eat when ending the Lemonade Diet. Don’t shock your system by coming off the diet and binging on junk food. Introduce solid food gradually over two to three days and stick with juices, raw foods, and soups at first.
Burroughs claimed it was safe to use the Lemonade Cleanse Diet for an extended time. He recommended a minimum of 10 days in order to receive the full health benefits and to use the cleanse 3 to 4 times each year to keep toxins flushed from the system.
This particular diet is said to have many benefits. Here are some of them: quick weight loss, kidney cleanse, colon cleanse, flush out hardened sediments from the muscles and joints, reduce blood pressure, reverse edema, strengthen nerves, purify the cells, and eliminate toxins from the body.
The Lemonade Diet has been used for decades as a detox diet and a weight loss diet. It recently regained popularity when Beyonce announced she used the diet to lose weight for her role in the movie Dreamgirls. Suddenly, interest was renewed in the diet but more for quick weight loss rather than as a detox diet as it was originally intended.
The Lemonade Cleanse Diet is an extreme diet so if you have any existing health conditions it is probably a good idea to let your doctor know you are going on the diet. Diabetics in particular need to be cautious when making radical changes to their diets.
